Redesigning the budgeting experience of Beforepay

Beforepay is an app which can be used to access pay before your payday. It is also a budgeting app which helps you set budget targets and save up money.

The goal- To make some changes to Beforepay's budgeting feature in order to remove any cognitive load and make it easier to understand and use.

Change 1

What can be changed ?

Though automation is convenient and faster, it should not curb user freedom. The app gives a standard budget of $650 and people had no idea why it is set that way no matter how long they are setting a budget for. For example it showed 650 for weekly, fortnightly and monthly  budgets.

Let people start with
entering their pay

Writing down your pay is the first step in creating any budget. What users do in real life should match what users do on the app. This natural flow of budgeting must be replicated .

Therefore I made changes so that budgeting starts with the user entering his pay.
This way users will feel more invested as they create a budget on their terms.

This solution avoids any confusion that may occur and is also apt for different user scenarios such no matter how they receive their pay.

Small changes in copywriting

At various points in the redesign I made some
small changes to the copy explaining what the features meant. For example, broken the original design into 2 screens and added a heading at the top "start saving from".

Spendings and savings as a part of the pay

Showing spendings and savings as a part of the pay (image on the left) makes the budget more intuitive and informative to the user hence encouraging savings.

This elevates the experience as we are giving a clear picture of the user's finances. Also this provides better visibility of the system status
hence making the design more human centric.

Change 2

What can be changed ?

Separate savers from non savers as people cannot save up on bills. For example house rent, college fees, and loans that occur every month or once every few months cannot be reduced.
This could even include prepaid phone, internet bills and other subscriptions.

How it helps

There is a possibility that users could set wrong or impossible budget targets for themselves. They will then feel dejected when they are unable to reach those targets.

Separating monthly bills which are a must spend expenditure and giving information about such bills that are coming up will prevent users from setting unrealistic budget targets.

Change 3

What can be changed ?

To make budgeting more efficient, the expenditure in various categories could be prefilled and we let users edit from there.

The following figure shows the current expenditure divided between various categories and gives users the power to

work from there to decrease their costs

and increase savings.
